Jan. 14th, 2008 10:31 amI'm seriously getting the giggles over some of the reviews people are leaving for 'The Golden Compass'.
You get everything from people screaming at how terrible and anti-Christian it is, to Christians lecturing how you should have more tolerance for things and to realize what is fiction and what is NOT fiction.
Then you get the ones who don't care either way and just enjoyed the movie for what it was.
I think a lot of the confusion was that people saw it as being anti-religious, when it's not. It's about corruption in religion itself, about fighting against that corruption. God isn't about the Church, God is what you believe.
They don't even kill "God" as it is, they kill someone who tried to overthrow that original authority. >_>
So yes, there are disturbing points and not so disturbing points. But when it comes all down to it, it's a fiction story. Fantasy and just like HP, it's not going to turn your children into God--hating atheists or whathaveyou.
Many children and families have read the books over the years, and haven't tried to overthrow the Church. The book has some solid, down-to-earth themes as well. Friendship being one of the main ones of them.
<3 Just sit back and enjoy a story when you watch/read it.
Yes, I always wanted a daemon after reading the series. It sounded so neat. XD
