I'm seriously getting the giggles over some of the reviews people are leaving for 'The Golden Compass'.

You get everything from people screaming at how terrible and anti-Christian it is, to Christians lecturing how you should have more tolerance for things and to realize what is fiction and what is NOT fiction.

Then you get the ones who don't care either way and just enjoyed the movie for what it was.

I think a lot of the confusion was that people saw it as being anti-religious, when it's not. It's about corruption in religion itself, about fighting against that corruption. God isn't about the Church, God is what you believe.

They don't even kill "God" as it is, they kill someone who tried to overthrow that original authority. >_>

So yes, there are disturbing points and not so disturbing points. But when it comes all down to it, it's a fiction story. Fantasy and just like HP, it's not going to turn your children into God--hating atheists or whathaveyou.

Many children and families have read the books over the years, and haven't tried to overthrow the Church. The book has some solid, down-to-earth themes as well. Friendship being one of the main ones of them.

<3 Just sit back and enjoy a story when you watch/read it.

Yes, I always wanted a daemon after reading the series. It sounded so neat. XD

tl;dr? yes XD

*eyeroll* Most Christians are fine and thinking people, but the Christian 'community' as a whole can be so ignorant. I mean...f you don't believe your kids should see/read HDM? Then keep them away from it! But don't go slamming what may be a well-made movie and what supposedly is (I've never read them but people swear by them XD) a very intelligent book because you don't agree with it. I mean, atheists didn't attack Narnia (as much as Christians are attacking TCG, anyway) because they understood -- fiction! You can believe in it as a metaphor, or you can...not. Your choice!

However, I do think Philip Pullman is an asshole XD; Some things he's said, about religion and C.S. Lewis and about the purpose of his books, would be offensive even if I was an atheist XD

You might be interested in this (http://www.pluggedinonline.com/thisweekonly/a0003516.cfm). It's a fairly interesting Christian POV article. They have less of a problem with the story and more of a problem with Philip Pullman's intent *for* the story.

*laughs*

If people kept on attacking me, I'd get into a snit, too. *g* I'll read the article.

Back when "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" came out in theaters my boss was taking his kids to see it because it was being decried on TV by some pastor as 'against God.' He'd never read them so he didn't understand why I almost pissed myself laughing.

/end randomness
