Written for a timed challenge for Sailor Moon....

ye gods, I haven't written Sailor Moon fic in years upon years... and I realize my earlier stuff was so fluffy as to be sickening. XD This may be a bit darker and I have no idea where I was going with this, but it was interesting to write.

Sailor Moon does not belong to me—I only write it once in a blue moon. XD

Usagi had always taken things for granted—her family and her comfortable life, the fact that her friends would be there and her grades would be bad. Laughter was the cure to all and tears could bring back anything.

It wasn't until the year Usagi was fourteen that she realized not everything was a constant. Your family could turn away from you;  that the comfortable life you had been living for so long was suddenly turned on its axis until nothing made sense anymore. When cats talked and suddenly she, more than anyone else, was supposed to turn things around. She knew then that something was wrong, this wasn't-meant-to-be.

She had learned at one point of the person that held the world on his shoulders, of the burden he bore every day to keep things right again. When Luna showed up on her doorstep, it was as if someone kicked Atlas in the knees and staggered him. That was the extent of how strange things were, at least at first.

But as time went on, something tugged at the back of her mind, the incantations she chanted became more familiar and she found herself slipping into a role that was never meant to be hers, but something that she had watched and studied for so long. That there was something about the mysterious people that taunted her from the sidelines or through dark enemies…

Something wasn't right…her mind taunted. Something was off kilter more than before, and Usagi felt that if she could tilt the world a little more, it would reveal something that she knew all along, but wasn't able to see until now.

More often that not, she dreamed of being held in rigid arms, the face carefully concealed and loving touches brief and fleeing. Accusative eyes from those that she cared about, as if she was playing with fire in a wooden house. In her dreams, she too, was rigid and watchful, as if every moment stolen was the last one offered.

It felt the most right when she was conversing with Tuxedo Kamen; it was only after he saved her or her comrades that she dreamed of sweeping gowns and smiling faces highlighted by a bluish light. It was only after those dreams that she awoke with an ache in her heart and her mind hazy.

As the enemies grew thicker and the ones that once stood on the side moved in closer, the dreams grew more numerous and her disorientation stronger. She would turn a corner and not know where she was—and only the guiding hand of Mamoru would push her in the right direction. As if a switch was reset, her mind let go of glittering ballrooms and latched onto the simplicity of a green tea shake or the newest manga.

Nothing would ever go back to the way it was before the middle of Usagi's fourteenth year. Laughter still cured most of life's superficial wounds, but couldn't heal a broken heart—and when Endymion was taken away from her once more and she realized all that she had been dreaming was once real, Serenity knew that nothing would ever be the same again.

Ooh, I liked that. Because of my silly browser, I almost thought it ended with "manga," and I thought it would have ended well there too, but even the small additional paragraph had a nice, solid ending too it.

Nice.

^___^

Thanks! I am so out of touch with Sailor Moon, but I thought it'd be fun to try. :)
