Merry Christmas to [livejournal.com profile] baine

Bonnie wanted a piece of my original story for her Christmas gift, and while it isn't a lot, it is part of what I've written up. It may be different from what you read, Bonnie, and I am thinking of making this the new start to my story. ^^; I hope you like still and there should be more to come.

The crowd surged around Kytia, all of them excited to see this special guest on their most sacred of days. Fala's Day, the day of Fires. And this bard was traveling from far away to honor them.

There-she barely caught a glimpse of him, but he was visible just the same, with the beautiful hooded cloak he was wearing. The reds and gold threads woven in the cloth were shimmering like the fires themselves. Then he pushed back his hood, and Kytia barely stifled her gasp. He was beautiful. He held a sense about him that was different than anyone else. Gold-red hair was held back in a braid, but some strands fell loose to surround his face. It was like her hair--the same strange red tips--only his looked more natural.

But instead of moving closer to him when he turned around, she took a step backward, mind stunned. She knew him, some part of her recognized him from before. Those same warm, amber colored eyes, that gentle smile. She could almost hear the sound of his voice, gently teasing.

'Little sister…' She took another step back, but before she could escape, his eyes met hers and his own widened in shocked recognition. He reached out to her, but she couldn't know him, she wouldn't go to him--she turned and ran, shifting through the crowd easily, making her way through the familiar streets and away from the celebrations.

She didn't realize what a mistake she was making at the time.

Hikari stared in shock at the fleeing form. It couldn't be--but it looked like--but it wasn't possible.

"Kytia…" He murmured. He started after her, but there was suddenly a uniformed guard at his side, and another was already leading the girl that resembled Kytia back towards him.

"You need to come with me." A voice said quietly, almost apologetic. Hikari nodded, showing that he understand what was going on, even if he didn't understand the situation fully. There was already hostile stares toward Kytia, muttering about her strangeness and disrespect. Hikari could only wait….

The guard looked over at the two waiting to be questioned. He knew the girl--Kytia--but not that well. She had never caused any real trouble before. Rather full of energy at times and was prone to talking to anyone and everyone that passed her by, but she wasn't more than a minor bother, and never did anything like disturb the Festival of Fires.

The bard was a different story, an honored guest called from the Far Lands to perform for Fala's Day. He normally would not have bothered with him, but Kytia ran from him, something about him frightened the girl that hardly ever got frightened. When she was initially questioned, she said that she didn't know him. But after looking at the two, it was clear to see their had to be some relation.

Both had the same tilted amber-colored eyes, same pointed face and their hair was even similar, even with his being more of a red-gold than Kytia's. The fact that both of them had the same unusual and distinct red tips was pointing at them being related.

He obviously knew her--the guard didn't miss the concerned, confused looks the bard gave Kytia, as if wondering why she didn't know him. She was scared--or uneasy at least.

"Who are you to her?" He asked the young man softly. He didn't like seeing the people that he swore to protect scared.

The bard's eyes were sad as they rested on Kytia. "I don't really believe I can say anything without hurting her."

The guard was sympathetic, but there was no getting around this, and he said as much. "You're still going to have to explain yourself." He said gently. "I'm not the one you need to talk to, but believe me--you're both in a bit of trouble here, and explanations will clear up things faster."

He would have said more to them--more encouraging words or some advice, but they were then called in to talk to the judge.

The judge looked at the pair solemnly. "Kytia--you know that it is a grave offense to disturb the festival in the manner that you did. I understand that you were startled, but frightening the guests around you, running off in such a manner--" He sighed and shook his head before turning to the bard. "And while you are a guest, you apparently frightened a citizen of our city. Can you please explain yourselves?"

Kytia gulped and looked down at her lap, and Hikari sighed softly. His gaze moved over Kytia for a moment before meeting the judge's eyes. "She is my sister." He said calmly. "I …it was a shock to see her, I had thought she had been lost forever."

Kytia looked startled and the judge frowned thoughtfully. "Are you certain?" He asked skeptically. "Kytia may look like your sister, but you cannot judge on looks alone." His voice sounded doubtful to his own ears as he looked between the two of them. The resemblance was fairly obvious.

Hikari gave him a slight smile, almost as if he knew what the judge was thinking. "It was not my intention to cause a disturbance of any kind. I didn’t think… it never crossed my mind that Kytia would be here." Another concerned, searching look was aimed towards the now uncomfortable girl, but a slight blush appeared on her cheeks as she knew that she was to blame for the bard's startlement.

"You startled me as well." Her voice was softer and more unsure than it had ever been before. "The way you looked…" She broke off uncertainly. "I've never seen anyone that looked like me…"

Hikari grinned at her words and tugged on her hair. "We are rather unique around here."

"You mean our family looks like this as well?" She asked, her eyes brightening a little. I'm not an oddity? A freak of nature? I was meant to look this way and others look like me? In her excitement, she didn't notice the slip about 'our' family, and Hikari let it go for now. Something was wrong here and he had to move carefully. Too many words would shut her down completely.

"There are many that have our features, Kytia." He said instead, voice carefully easy-going. He had to treat her as if she were a wild animal, easy to startle. "Those of us that knew you….we missed you more than you know."

There was no mistaking the sincerity in his voice, and he turned those amber eyes that were so similar to her own to meet her gaze. "Will you come home?"
