Chapter One

No real warnings/pairings, maybe some spoilers in later chapters.
G/PG at the moment.

I don’t own Saiyuki, never meant to imply that I did. This is sort of a new idea for me, one that I tossed back and forth in my head today, and at Tgyrewods. ^_^ Thanks for being a sounding board, and I hope this first chapter comes out okay. The really interesting part will come in the second chapter, and I hope I can get that out before break starts. ^_^

He knew something was amiss as soon as he took in his surroundings. There was a feeling of wrongness the vibrated through him, setting every nerve on edge. He knew… somehow… that it had to do with Goku. Not even thinking, he went to where he knew Goku would be, where he felt that cord that had bound them together centuries ago. He hoped that whatever it was, he wasn’t too late.

Red dirt kicked up everywhere, obscuring his vision. The world below hadn’t changed that much in the centuries—at least not in the place that was at. He searched for Goku, wondering why his friend would be in the midst of all this—from what he recalled of Goku, from what he last saw of his friend—he wasn’t one to fight. He was a child, and innocent. Goku never had to deal with the expectations of using his strength to subdue and eradicate youkai like he had to. He was feared because of his potential, but never used, strength.

The dust cleared enough for him to finally spot Goku, and he saw that he was almost too late. For his friend was fighting a losing battle, being worn down by the almost endless stream of youkai. Through little spurts he could see other people with him, but he dismissed them as unimportant. The only one he cared about was Goku, and in the next few seconds, he knew that he was going to lose him forever if he didn’t move quickly. The youkai were closing in on the young boy as the ground was crumbling beneath his feet. He was still sluggish from his five hundred years of self-imposed coma, and he knew that he couldn’t get there in time to fend off the youkai around him.

His only hope was catching him as he fell from the cliff. Ignoring the looks of the people that he could see clearly now, his mind ignored the hints that he knew them as well, that they were important in their own way. Bleary golden eyes met his on non-comprehension as his hands closed around Goku’s. Just before they would have hit the bottom, Goku went limp in his arms.
He looked around the unfamiliar area, at the cliffs high above them and the remains of the youkai ready to close in. He wasn’t prepared to fight when he had Goku to deal with, and wasn’t going to abandon his friend just when he found him again.

Leaving the world below, he took Goku back to Tenkai—a place he hadn’t been for five hundred years.
